gerbera

The gerbera is a large flat daisy like flower. It is one of the world's most popular cut flowers. There are also some shorter stemmed varieties that are grown as pot plants. Flowers come in shades of red, orange, yellow, cream and pink. The varieties available include light eyed, dark eyed, spiders, semi-doubles and minis.

Gerberas like a well drained growing medium. The professional cut flower growers only keep plants for 2 years before discarding them. This helps to minimise disease problems. The potted gerberas are usually treated as an annual and don't perform overly well in the garden. Some of the diseases this plant is vulnerable to include powdery mildew and botrytis. Good water management can minimise these. Insect damage can occur from leaf miners, thrip, aphid and whitefly.

A bunch or gerbera flowers should be put in water straight away. If the stems are soft, cut the ends of the stems off before putting in water. As the stems take up water, they will become stiffer. Sometimes wire is used to support and assist in the placement of flowers.
